By nature, certain sports (such as football, ice hockey, etc.) have higher levels of contact between players. Thus, they inevitably include more aggression. The dangers of professional football is a hot topic. Studies have found high rates of concussions, traumatic brain injuries, and a serious brain disorder called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in former players. These injuries can have terribly debilitating effects.
But playing football isn’t without its risks. According to the National High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance Study, more than 500,000 high school football injuries occurred between the 2014 and 2015 school year. “Regardless of how safe we make it, it’s still a dangerous sport,” explains Dr. Behr.
However, another landmark study found that only football and wrestling correlate with aggression—not basketball, soccer, or any other sport. In fact, they were 40% more likely to be aggressive, even off the field. Athletes of other sports showed no association with aggression.
