An H-back is an offensive position in American football. The H-back lines up similarly to a tight end, but is “set back” from the line of scrimmage, and is thus counted as one of the four “backs” in the offensive formation. The position was named F-back when used later in Norv Turner’s offensive system.

Among the defensive backs, there are two main types, cornerbacks, which play nearer the line of scrimmage and the sideline, whose main role is to cover the opposing team’s wide receivers, and the safeties, who play further back near the center of the field, and who act as the last line of defense.
An offensive person will use force to secure a goal and try to eliminate the factors that might prevent them from securing it. On the other hand, a defensive person will use force or aggression in order to ward off an attack, make the threat go away, and prevent themselves from being injured.

Usually, there are four players on the defensive line, two defensive tackles and two defensive ends. Then, there are linebackers. The linebacker group is made up of the middle linebacker (MLB) and the left and right outside linebackers (LOLB, ROLB). Finally, the defensive backs (sometimes called the secondary).
Like their offensive counterparts, defensive linemen line up directly on the line of scrimmage, close to the ball. Their function is to rush the passer (if they can get past the offensive linemen blocking them), and stop running plays directed at the middle of the line of scrimmage.
The defensive line consists of one or two defensive tackles and two defensive ends who play outside the defensive tackles. The defensive tackles are usually the most skilled run defenders on the team. On passing plays, the defensive line tries to reach the quarterback.
