A curl route, also called a hitch or hook (sometimes a button hook), is a pattern run by a receiver in American football, where the receiver appears to be running a fly pattern but after a set number of steps or yards will quickly stop and turn around, looking for a pass.
Nickel means five defensive backs (usually three CB’s and two safeties, but can be reversed). Dime is six DB’s, Quarter is seven, and Dollar is eight. As you can see, defensive formations are all about personnel on the field. Their responsibilities vary, even within each formation.Jul 13, 2012
A nutmeg (or tunnel, nut, megs, megnuts, panna, brooksy, codling) is a skill used mainly in association football, but also in field hockey, ice hockey, and basketball. The aim is to kick, roll, dribble, throw, or push the ball (or puck) between an opponent’s legs (feet).
The Tampa 2 is typically employed out of a 4–3 defensive alignment, which consists of four linemen, three linebackers, two cornerbacks, and two safeties. The defense is similar to a Cover 2 defense, except the middle linebacker drops into a deep middle coverage for a Cover 3 when he reads a pass play.
As the name suggests, the Cover 3 has three defenders in deep zone coverage. But while Cover 2 usually sees the safeties playing deep while the corners and linebackers play a variety of coverages underneath the safeties’ zone coverage, Cover 3 takes a different tact.Jun 28, 2016

All coverage shell schemes are referred to as “Cover #,” with the number denoting one or more players with specific defensive assignments for the shell in question. For example, in a “Cover 2” defense, the free safety and strong safety are each responsible for one half of the field and play deep coverage.
In traditional Cover 2 schemes the free safety (FS) and strong safety (SS) have deep responsibilities, each guarding half of the field. The NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, and New York Giants run a variant of this defense called the Tampa 2.
What is Cover 2? The base Cover 2 is a zone defense where every defender is responsible for an area of the field and not a specific man. The field is divided into five underneath zones and two deep zones. The two corners and three linebackers play the underneath fifths, and the two safeties play…
This looks like a Cover 2 Man or Cover 2 Zone. But at the snap of the ball, the defense rolls into a cover 3 look with the cornerback on the side of the free safety (RC on the diagram) bailing into a deep third, the free safety rolling to the middle third, and the…
