Eleven minutes We may not realize it, but there is very little football that is actually played. Yes, the players run around, return to the huddle, and repeat, but the time the players actually play the game is astoundingly small. Eleven minutes. Yes, in a 3-hour game, the time the ball is in play equals about eleven minutes.
The ideal kickoff travels about 70 yards and hangs in the air for over 4.5 seconds. Maximizing hang time (the length of time the football is in the air) is important because it enables players on the kicking team to run down the field and cover the kick, thus tackling the return man closer to his own end zone.
There are two ways to kick a field goal: soccer style or straight ahead. In soccer style the ball is approached from an angle and kicked with the top side of the foot, just like with a soccer ball. Today, all the best field goal kickers kick the ball soccer style.
As the term indicates, a direct free kick may be kicked into the net and count as a goal -- as opposed to an indirect free kick which must touch a second player before a goal can be scored. Additionally, Law 8 of the FIFA Laws of the Game specifically states that "a goal may be scored directly from the kick-off."
